Yoga Gone Wrong: Plane Rerouted Due to Violence on Board

Hawaii is known for its beaches, cuisine, and yoga retreats.

I would hope that anyone leaving such a beautiful place would leave feeling relaxed and content. That’s why I’m so surprised to hear about this incident. An United Airlines flight bound for Japan had to return back to Hawaii due to a disgruntled passenger becoming violent after practicing yoga on board. I am confused. But how and why?

According to the FBI, the passenger did not want to stay in his seat during the meal. Okay, I get that. It’s a long flight from Hawaii to Japan. Also, it’s healthy to do some exercises while in flight. So he retreated to the back of the plane to stretch, but this is where I get lost. There really isn’t enough room to do the downward down yoga pose on a plane. There really isn’t much space to do anything!

So after a couple stretches, the flight attendants ask him to return to his seat and he refused. When his wife intervened, he got angry.  “He felt that she was siding with the flight crew. He tried to head-butt and bite Marines who were passengers on the flight and tried to force him back to his seat. ”

What kind of craziness? Can you imagine?

So the plane was rerouted back to Hawaii safely. The passenger now has a 25K bond attached to his name and is not allowed to return home, until further notice. This was the couple’s first trip to Hawaii and he went to the yoga retreat to help with his anxiety.

Travel anxiety is quite common. Here are some recommendations if you ever feel anxious.

  1. Deep Breathing 2. Listen to Music 3. Exercise 4. Seek Professional Help

What do you guys think? Should Yoga be allowed on board? Was the passenger out of line?

  1. Passenger was way out of line. If he went to the retreat for his anxiety, then he knew he needed to take extra precautions before boarding that flightm for a pre existing condition. With all the security risks and terroist attacks on flights in recent years, an airplane is not the time to do yoga. Do it at the airport, in fact some airports have yoga rooms. He deserves every bit of what he gets, it was unnecessary and disruptive.

  2. I think the flight attendant(s) gave him enough time to stretch and were well within their rights to request his to return to his seat. Take several seats sir! AND he tried to head butt a Marine?????? What kind of Yoga retreat was this if he left without some sort of “Zen”? I feel bad for his wife. Le sigh!
