Wouldn’t life just be a bit sweeter if you got a complimentary upgrade to your hotel suite? Many have tried but few have succeeded. Here are some tips to get a free upgrade no matter where your travels take you.
TIP #1 – BE CONSIDERATE
Say Hello, introduce yourself and ask the person the following question: How are you? Listen and then ask, how’s your day going?
I know this sounds so simple but making genuine connections is lacking in our society. Blame it on texting and the desire for instant gratification. Anyone who works in customer service is constantly berated with complaints and problems. Rarely does anyone ask them how they are doing. Being considerate and taking a genuine interest with the person on the other line will get you far.
TIP #2 – PRESENT A STORY
Whether it is your first time in Paris or you are celebrating an anniversary – have a story that pulls the heart strings so people want to help you. People always want to help, they just need a reason. For instance, it could be your first international trip with your significant other and you want to make it special. Don’t lie. Be honest and forthcoming – explain why having an upgrade will make your trip memorable.
TIP #3 – SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE IN THE POWER
Be nice and considerate to everyone but realize you must talk to a person of authority who can actually make your wish come true. Remember (or takes notes) of everyone you spoke to – the concierge, the receptionist and when you finally get transferred to the manager you can detail everyone you spoke to and how excited you are about the possibility of being upgraded.
TIP #4 – GIVE ENOUGH NOTICE
I would give the hotel at least 24 hours to check if there is space available. Don’t be afraid to ask. Hotels aren’t missing out on revenue by living the rooms vacant, but they will increase guest satisfaction by giving you an upgrade.
TIP #5 – PAY IT FORWARD
Social media has a huge impact on the travel industry. People won’t eat a restaurant or stay at a hotel unless someone has taken photos and written great things. Mention that you will write a review on TripAdvisor or Yelp and that will definitely peak their interests to upgrade you.
