The couple that gets dirty together, stays together.
I have always wanted to do a Tough Mudder with a date. After doing dinner and a movie several times a month, you have to spice things up!
If you have never heard of Tough Mudder, you have come to the right place. Do you want to feel like a superhero? Look no further. Imagine jumping over fire, swinging on monkey bars over a pool of mud water, and even better – dodging electric wires. You don’t have to be in the best shape of your life, but now is the time to use your gym membership to prepare yourself for the experience of a lifetime.
Tough Mudder is an obstacle course that tests your stamina and strengthens your bond with your peers and even strangers. There is just something about overcoming obstacles in the mud that brings people closer together. Tough Mudder is NOT A RACE. It’s a great way to forge teamwork because – GUESS WHAT – more than half of the obstacles you CANNOT complete yourself – it requires the participants to work together.
Tough Mudder has an array of obstacles from scaling walls to crawling under barb wire – but fear not, you WILL OVERCOME EVERY OBSTACLE. Leave no man or woman behind – everyone will be there to help you.
Tough Mudder is traditionally 10-12 miles with over 20 obstacles OR you can go for the Tough Mudder HALF that reduces the distance to five miles.
Let’s address some questions you probably have.
SHOULD I DO A TOUGH MUDDER?
Yes. Yes, you should do it. You will laugh. You will smile. You’ll have mud in places you never thought mud could go. Do it. You’ll get an amazing workout, while learning team work makes the dream work.
WHAT IS THE COURSE LIKE?
It depends on your location. Tough Mudder is worldwide – so you can complete this in Canada or Hawaii. I completed my Tough Mudder in Atlanta, Georgia. Some places will have more hills than others, but the obstacles will be the same.
HOW SHOULD I TRAIN FOR A TOUGH MUDDER?
I did not workout at all before attempting a Tough Mudder (DO NOT TRY THIS). I finished the course, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND working out 3(x) a week with cardio and strength training. Tough Mudder has a recommended training schedule on their site.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR FOR A TOUGH MUDDER?
- Merrell Trail Running Shoes
- Breathable & Quick Drying Clothes, especially socks
- Gloves (Helpful on rope and monkey bars)
- Hat to keep the sun out of your eyes
WHERE DO I STORE MY ITEMS DURING THE RACE?
There is a bag drop off on site for $5-10 dollars.
CAN I WALK?
YES. Everyone walks at some point in time during the race. There may even be lines for you to complete an obstacle. Keep in mind that you’re not training for a marathon, and it’s totally okay if you walk between obstacles.
WHICH OBSTACLE IS THE WORST? CAN I SKIP OBSTACLES?
The unique thing about Tough Mudder is that it’s impossible to say which obstacle is the toughest. Some people are scared of heights while others are scared of water. There is no shame if you want to skip any obstacle. You will still get your victory beer, head-band, and t-shirt at the finish line.
DOES THE ELECTROSHOCK THERAPY HURT?
YES, but not the way you think. It zaps you and makes you keep moving! Electroshock Therapy is the final obstacle before the finish line, which requires less physical strength and a lot of “Mental Grit.” That being said, it is still incredibly safe, but should avoid if you have surgery recently or have any metal in your body. Not into electricity? Check out ToughMudder Half, which leaves out some of those more daunting obstacles yet still packs in plenty of Tough Mudder thrills.
WHERE DO I GET TICKETS? DO YOU HAVE A DISCOUNT CODE?

As always, let’s keep the conversation going on Twitter. Have you done a Tough Mudder? Would you do it as a date?
